A Lifelong Commitment to Inclusive Education

Over three and a half decades of pedagogical scholarship, research guidance, and government advisory service at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi.

Scholar, Policy Architect & Venerable Teacher

Prof. Prem Shanker Ram (Retd.) has dedicated more than three and a half decades to educational excellence at the Faculty of Education, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi. Recognized across India as a foremost authority in Special Education, he has championed universal design for learning (UDL), assistive technology integration, Braille literacy, and the holistic rehabilitation of children with sensory, cognitive, and physical impairments.

His academic journey is rooted in deep empirical rigor. Awarded his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Education from BHU in December 1992, Prof. Ram conducted seminal research exploring perceptual-cognitive dynamics in visually challenged learners. He subsequently served at the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), New Delhi and the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE), M.J.P. Rohilkhand University, Bareilly, before being inducted to the faculty of Banaras Hindu University in January 1997.

His distinguished academic stature earned him high-level consultative deputations under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD, now Ministry of Education) and the Department of Women & Child Development (WCD). In these national roles, Prof. Ram contributed directly to policy frameworks for Children with Special Needs (CWSN), grassroot screening modules for Anganwadi workers, and early childhood protection guidelines.

Following his celebratory superannuation in June 2025 from BHU as Senior Professor, Prof. Ram has rededicated his post-retirement life to the noble cause of free education, open mentorship, and student empowerment, ensuring that financial constraints never hinder talented scholars from rural and marginalized backgrounds.
